Hell Makes A Visit

Windows shut,
the door locked,
hell is making a visit.

A mother a shield
to protect her child,
takes a beating in silence.

The husband’s blows
vibrate through thin walls.
neighbors suddenly deaf.

A slamming door,
moans carried on the wind,
no one calls the police.

A young mother dead,
her child crying in her arms,
hell had made a visit.

There Was A Time

There was a time
I wore flowers in my hair.
believed love
to be the universal theme,
and a peace sign was more
than a fashion statement.

There was a time when
I protested war;
marching in the streets
with signs begging
there be an end
to the carnage.

There was a time
when I wore
a silver bracelet
with the name
of a prisoner of war,
leaving it on my
wrist until he came home.

There was a time
When I was not concerned
with acquiring possessions.
The little I owned
was given to others
when their need
was greater than mine.

There was a time
should not be my epitaph.
there is still a need
for flowers in my hair,
for universal love,
for a peace sign
to mean more than
a fashion statement.

Death With Its Funeral Shoes

There are no phrases
whispering from my soul.

Speech, hard, angry
yells from my center.
Death with its funeral shoes
has walked across my spirit.

Why now? Why so many?
Don’t tell me God called
and they went willingly!

If I am not given more
than I can bear,
why am I lying prostrate
upon the rug of my misery?

Death stop visiting,
place no more black ribbons
on my door!
I am sick of roses
lying wilted on a grave.

Peace where are you?
I am tired of residing
in obituary’s hell.

Nuclear Bread

A world hungry for electricity
eats nuclear bread,
risking death from radioactive mold.
Mother Nature’s unexpected visit
to the bakeries
in the land of the rising sun
unveiled the horror that occurs
when the oven becomes too hot.
Her lesson plan was to teach humanity
it must learn to control its appetite
or die in the decay
of its mass consumption.

Mother You Are A Stranger

Mother what happened
To your laughter
I remember your smile
The lullaby you sang
As you brushed my hair

You are now a stranger
Bitter and remote
The song gone
From your voice

Your eyes search
Somewhere far away
Come back to me
It is cold here
Without your love

Faded Secrets

Yellow letters in a trunk
Faded secrets whispering
From another decade

A war that engulfed the world
Brought home in the words
Of a lonely soldier

I miss your arms holding me
My bunk a refuge
Where your letters comfort

Large X’s across a page
I can’t wait to see you again
I carry you in my heart

Home I am home
But I have returned
To a new war

Trust has been broken
My bride writing to another
While I was across the ocean

I just got here now I must leave
Packing my broken heart
And going back to my roots

I will wait here until I hear
Do you still love me
Am I what you want

Yellow tears reaching
The hearts of children
They have just discovered secrets

I Saw Red

I saw red
my world
black and white,
its passion
along my soul.
My heartbeat
in the darkness
me alive
until color
to my days.

Shades Drawn On Romance

Shades drawn
on romance,
I sit in my skin
passion buried
beneath the
of failed
to stoke
Aphrodite’s fire.

Our love covered
in winter frost
has my tears
skating on
a frozen pond.
I pray spring
will come
to thaw the ice
before my
heart dies
from frost bite.

Where Are The Words

White glaring empty
Where are the words
That kept me awake
Inspiration singing
Its aria when all I
Wanted was to sleep
Oh fickle mind
I can recall
What I had for lunch
But not the verses
That had me tossing
And turning
Tonight I will sleep
With pen in hand
To capture
Inspiration’s message
And write it
In black ink
Upon my bed sheets

Complaining Pox

A day darkened
With frowns
Face appearing
At every turn

Negative an
With its
Complaining pox

Flies on
To obtain

The antidote
To a frown
Is a smile
A self
Of positive
To reverse
The effects
Of dour

Spring Remove Death's Cloud

Spring come remove
the cloud of death
surrounding me.

Bring bright blooms
sprouting from green grass,
not the vases of funeral flowers
adorning coffins.

I have said too many goodbyes.
Pieces of my heart torn
and buried in the dust.

My soul a trunk of memories
digging through what was,
trying to escape the grief.

Spring you are my prayer;
my hope I can be renewed.
Send your sunshine
to help me crawl out of the dark.

Turn Heaven Backwards

Can I forget
before it is
even a memory?

This day
a hideous
left on my soul.

Turn heaven
to leave you

That I could
return to
my wish
before you
my reality.

I plead
my heart
before it is

Who dries the tears
of the comforter
when they come as rain?

When the encourager
has run out of words
who will speak hope?

When grief has torn
the walls from the fortress,
who will help rebuild?

Who will lift the rock
when agony becomes
more than it can bear?
