"I am hearing poetry when awake, dreaming poetry when asleep, breathing poetry with each breath, I am living in a poem."

Foggy forest covered in a misty curtain,
its trees like silent medieval guardians.
Water diamonded spider webs
are strung between knotted limbs.
Colorful foliage now painted in a
palette of black and white.

Daydreams wrapped in opaque blankets
surround the dreamer who ventures
out in the predawn haze,
steps muffled in the ghostlike silence.

Through the murk shadowed shapes
pass on their way to greet morning,
quiet companions in a world not yet awake.

Anticipating its cue from Mother Nature
the sun waits offstage to make its appearance,
but with all its shining it can not
break through the veil until the vapor
takes its bow and exits nature’s theater.

Life Dance of Joy

Some days I don’t even know who I am
The mirror shows me one face my soul another
Those eyes looking back at me tell a story
My heart does not believe

Reflected is a face that life has lined with
Pains markings of deep furrows erasing youth
Wearied eyes knowing there will be fewer tomorrows

Yet in my spirit I hear the child whose sunshine voice
Brightens my being with her laughter as she dances
Along my heartstrings in a ballet of life’s joy

Life’s calendar may have passed my youth
But days counted in only looking toward endings
Are a bleakness in which I will not live

I will take the hand of my spirit child to
Dance in celebration of each day I am given
A choreography of exaltation to be taught
To those who come my way

Eyes in blue twinkle look upon the world
With dancing merriment drawing hearts
To join in her soul song of joy

Arms open she runs with exuberance
Through life taking in all she can
Nothing is missed in her journey
Be it as tiny as a sparkling raindrop
Or as majestic as mountain sunrise

Passions heat burns from her being
Touching those she comes near
A golden branding the bearer
Proudly displays

She knows not what her legacy
Will be in a world so large
Her only hope that when remembered
Those she touched can say she loved me
She made me smile

Butterfly Star Shine

Within the star’s bright shining resides a butterfly
Her purple tipped wings glitter with the dreams
Of those she visits while they slumber

Her evening flight takes her across the terra firma
In search of those who’s heart seeks to know
The mysteries held within her

Hovering close for just a moment she visits
Her mortal companions while they are unaware
Whispering words that only imagination can interpret

As daylight arrives she returns to her celestial perch
To watch the awakening of those she attended
As they open new eyes to see the secrets
Revealed by a butterfly

Wine Secrets

Looking at your picture,
reading your words,
drinking too much wine,
you had me spilling my secrets
one at a time.

Encouraged by spirits
I continued to share
all that was within me
much spoken without care.

I have no clue as to what
you may be thinking
of my secrets revealed
during my drinking.

I shall keep away from spirits
the next time we speak
that I might talk in generalities
with no secrets to leak.

Night's Wandering

With quiet footsteps I walk through shadows
As once again I find sleep has chosen to
Take its drowsy eyes and dreams to someone else
My night wanderings through midnight halls
Are more familiar to me than slumber

Thoughts play in a random procession
Taking me from melodies I can’t forget
To love my heart seeks with tender yearning

Through moon tinted panes I look into the dark
Watching and waiting for woodland creatures
To bring me comfort as they too make their
Lonely treks on shadowed pathways

I hear the approach of morning traveling on the wind
The sun has not yet shown its face
As the moon lingers with one last kiss before dawn
Wrapped in my blanket of solitude I embrace
The hope sleep will surely come soon
And my long night will once again come to an end

Sleep Where Are You

Sleep where are you?
My thoughts will not stop
Their nocturnal wandering

Lyrics and melodies dance
With my imagination
As faces framed with
Misty recognition
Parade across my closed eyelids

Poems with rhyme and prose
Fill my head in bits and pieces
Taking me from one moment
Speaking of love to the next despair

I toss and turn trying to find
Comfort in a bed that feels
As if it has turned to stone

I implore my mind
To stop its migratory journey
To unconnected destinations
That I might find relief

With body tired and mind fractured
I know I must find rest
Oh sleep I beg
Where are you?

Handcuffed by Wings

My heart starts and stops at the sound of butterfly wings.
Her fluttering flight mimics my heartbeat
as she flies past me at the speed of wonderment.

If I wanted to escape the hold she has on me I could not,
for I never know where and when she will appear
to sit near me to whisper words
mere mortals are not meant to understand.

In sweet agony I find myself handcuffed by wings
of a gentle jailer from whom I seek no release,
to be set free would be a harsher punishment.
Oh what was life before the winged one landed near me?
