Every Glass Slipper Fits A Fool

A rusted padlock hangs
between my breast and ribs,
a keyless ornament once
polished by fairytales.

Every glass slipper fits a fool
who thinks lips possess resurrection,
and happily ever after comes with a map.

Quixotic eyes can go blind,
but because it is my heart
guarding unforgiving, my vision
has perfect hindsight.

In my last days of sticks and bones
romance has reached its expiration date.
opinions are spoiled fruit; wisdom
sits alone watching reruns.

Things may just come to a head. Seemingly under control but situational impacts affect adversely on what appeared normal. Great ending Susie!

Great response to the challenge, Susie. The fealty to one's heart is a bittersweet thing down the years -- certainly Stephan Crane felt it -- because no Other can know one's own heart in any sufficient enough way. And so we fare on with our own damn heart because, well, who else is going to? That wisdom is difficult, but it is real--a "rusted padlock," as you say, when "romance has reached its expiration date." Great job.

Oh dear! It feels like much repeats but hope there are ways out! Cleverly done if rather heartbreaking Susie! K.

"who thinks lips possess resurrection"
"Quixotic eyes can go blind"
"opinions are spoiled fruit"

I'm most drawn to these lines.

Best title ever, and a killer poem that follows!

It's nice, Susie. Many of us have gone through this cycle, I have. Not pleasant.
I think that the padlocking can go both ways simultaneously, that helps with taking some of the hurt away. Hindsight in the present would be wonderful.
..
Some great images and metaphors here.

Wisdom is watching reruns. At least it is not watching the evening news!

This is packed with great lines. You tap into the emotions of the broken heart in a way the reader can identify with.

Never could have walked in glass slippers anyway. Love the title, the poem is superb and that closing line about wisdom watching re-runs. Ouch! It resonates. Smiles.
Every glass slipper fits a fool
every happy ever after comes with a map.
These lines gave me a chuckle.
I like sardonic verse...don't think you can overdose on reality.
