The Song Of Where I'm From

I am from red dirt roads barefoot thick,
sorghum camouflaged moonshine.
I am from fields stone deep in hunger,
infant dreams ribbed with crow wings.

I am from discovered stills, a midnight run
from natural to show me, fear, empty pockets,
starting over, hardened skin, rainbow prayers.
I am from strawberry jelly, a wringer washer,
clothes hanging on a line, screen door breezes,
mulberry stains, sun baked mud pies.

I am from newspaper cut patterns, hand made dresses,
the scent of cinnamon, canned beans, oil soaked hands.
I am from hard work, tall trees, mushroom hunts,
whippoorwills, firefly palms, moonlight walks in my father’s shadow.

I am from faded photographs, unanswered questions,
hands that mimic my great grandfather’s, roots seeking sun.

True Americana at its finest!
I find it a shame that I will never meet in the flesh some of the people I've "met" virtually. I would very much enjoy spending time with the person who wrote this poem! :-)

I have read your poem several times, immersing in the rich flashes of images. Such a wonderful view of your worlds within worlds.

Wonderful... so many great images, and those pictures tell so much more. I especially like the unanswered questions... so many of those we all carry.

I love reading about other people's childhoods, especially when they are from different countries and cultures. This is wonderful!

This is wonderful, Susie, and reminds me how fortunate I am to be able to visit one of my mother's cousins next month.

There're so many amazing things from where you've come...sensory and textural and beautiful...a fabric of love you've woven. I love the rooted hands ending. Thank you for the wonderful challenge, Susie!

What others said is true - the real-life images make your words come to life. You've captured authentic human experience here - particularly, American experience. It's a poem I knew I wanted to read again the moment I finished. Thanks for sharing.

Susie, this is every bit as rich in root and phrase and memory as Lyon's original. Just wonderful.
This was so rich and descriptive - really great to read.

So rich and sensory. It's all so familiar because I am from that now too after living in the VA mountains for 30 years.

What a wonderful feast of family reminiscence! I too am from 'newspaper cut patterns, hand made dresses, the scent of cinnamon, canned beans ... hard work, tall trees, mushroom hunts ... moonlight walks in my father’s shadow.'
