In a pointed square dance
on weathered wood
a lone star brings visions
of cowboy boots, denim blue jeans,
and a cowboy riding the Texas wind.
Its tarnishing patina lassos the sun
pulling its rays across raisined skin
wiped dry by a red bandana.
It is comfort;
it is continuity;
it is strength;
it is pride;
to a Lone Star State
born from the dust of the Alamo.
This iconic symbol does
its dosey doe until sunset
and then retreats into the shadows
to let night brush against its steel
to polish its determination until
a new day rises in the east.
