Among Thorns

“ blooming is hard, and the most important thing is - to bloom. ― Yevgeny Zamyatin

Open palms gather
the night into petals
too fragile for the sun.

With a starlight audience
a flower breaks through its restraints
to steal a moment from eternity
and bloom among a sea of thorns.

Susie, I love "petals too fragile for the sun". I am thinking of that flower that blooms every 40 years but have not written about it yet..............great prompt, kiddo! Great poem!

Cactus flowers are some of the most beautiful out there, maybe more so because they are rarely seen. This poem has a real reflection of the purity, and the rarity of that which blooms while the world sleeps, and of that uniqueness, too, with the line 'petals too fragile for the sun'--a great contrast with the toughness a cactus has with its thick skin and thorns. Please forgive me for not doing this lovely prompt, and thank you for all your kind words over the years.
To bloom amid a sea of thorns... ah, surely there's an equivalent for us.

The contrast between the bloom and the thorns really makes this image complete.

I agree with Kerry on the contrast and I love the use of sea and stars here as well...a beautiful image, Susie. Thank you for the challenge!

Stealing a moment from eternity --the best any of us can do: bloom!

Even flowers need a room (or a time of day) of their own. Beautiful.

We all need room to bloom. What a lovely idea for a prompt! It makes me remember watching the night blooming coerus at my grandmother's house in Florida.
