NaPoWriMo 2013 Day 14 ~ Caught Between War and Peace

 Another Margarita ~ Joaquin Sorolla

Neutrality breathes with asthmatic gasps
in air burnt from cannon fire rumbling
its demand for yeah or nay.

Caught between war and peace
life is only a bullet’s distance
from a poppy covered grave.

She prays for her enemies by counting links on her iron rosary.

At Real Toads Hedgewitch has inspired us with the art of Joaquin Sorolla. I chose to write a sevenling. Sunday Challenge ~ Joaquin Sorolla

I included that painting because I thought it really stood out amongst Sorolla's works--you do more than do it justice here, Susie--the whole piece reflects the uncompromising nature(futility, waste, fear, loss) of war, and the sevenling is executed perfectly with that killer last line especially. Really a fine poem, and thank you so much for bringing it to the Garden.

A fantastic write, Susie. "life is only a bullet's distance from a poppy covered grave."

Your words are a devastating description of neutrality "caught between war and peace" — a truly amazing write, Susie, coming from a place of pain, not peace.

Impressive interpretation..
Forlorn and accepting. All portrayed in the most poignant phrases. You have such a gift and are making the most of it. I wish that I had phrases like that drift into my consciousness.
So sorry for what you all are going through.

The futility of war, the devastation ... your sevenling captures the emotion well.

I was intrigued by the defeat in her shoulders, her set. Powerful poem, killer ending.

I thought I commented here... but if not, I adored the ending. You captured her stooped shoulders and sense of giving up ...
