Flight

Were I to shed this flesh
that is glued to bone
I would take flight
as a butterfly.

Scaled wings would
take me beyond
my darkened cocoon
to drink the spirit’s nectar
that flows from the river
of the sun.

In starlight night my bed
would be on emerald leaves,
the wind rocking me to sleep.

Look not upon me with your judgment;
let my heart wish and don’t condemn.
I know my feet keep me bound to earth.
It is my dreams that give me wings.

Very nicely done, I especially love the "cocooning" comfort of the third verse.

who hasn't dreamed, in the innocence of youth, of being the butterfly? before the days of work and bills and grownup's toys we did. and so fortunate you're still able to "be the butterfly" thanks for sharing this :)

This poem is beautiful ♥ I love butterflies, love their apparent freedom and ability to 'sail' through life, nothing holding them back...

Your words are gorgeous :)

This is so beautifully written. With all the things that "weight us down" in life, I am sure many people feel this way.
