The fealty to one's heart is a bittersweet thing down the years -- certainly Stephan Crane felt it -- because no Other can know one's own heart in any sufficient enough way. And so we fare on with our own damn heart because, well, who else is going to? That wisdom is difficult, but it is real--a "rusted padlock," as you say, when "romance has reached its expiration date."
