A Most Uncivil War

We are most uncivil in our war.
I think this. You think that…
an angry rain of exclamation marks
has muddied the common ground.

Our anger is a status update begging for
the “like” minded to hit a button
to validate our discord.

Rapid fire opinions shoot from fingertips
made bold from their daily feeding
of bias served on a party’s plate.

Foxes aren’t subtle and peacocks turn left
as both blink their bite on screens
with volume turned up to evangelize division.

We are most uncivil in our war.
I think this. You think that…
an angry rain of exclamation marks
has muddied the common ground.

Wow, wow, wow! You nailed it all the way! I love this, and I've recently been thus embroiled. The daily feeding of bias! No evangelizing in this court, just poetry.

You have named what needed naming here Susie. Now is the time to rally our courage, to gather our words, leave the court-house (where judges judge people and people judge judges) and head into the court-yard, a space where we can be the voice and hands creating what our inspiration desires.

war in these times has become brutal and unjust 'a war within a war' a great effective poem highlighting the modern trends of conflict

Exactly...everyone is talking but nobody's listening. Well done, Susie.

Phew! That tells it like it is, Susie - none too pretty.

You speak from the heart, truthfully, as sad it is. Too bad we can't just accept to get along with each other. We need to go back to the basics. Something simple. Like behaving more like dogs! Seriously, animals have a natural and special way of getting along.

Interesting point.. I had this thought recently.. if you are not with us -- you are against us -- compromise is boring -- let's fight it out.. and alas I think it leads to very real wars in other part of the world.. it has not come to our gated communities yet.. we are still soldiers in this war though

I might have to start adding a link to your poem at the end of certain Facebook exchanges I've had the bad luck to witness.

Living poetry...

The refrain:

"We are most uncivil in our war.
I think this. You think that…
an angry rain of exclamation marks
has muddied the common ground."

...is powerful. A superb use of imagery and metaphor to drive the point home.

I kept in mind all the arguments I have come across on FB (more often than not between complete strangers), and yes, you are right. The wars have turned digital and we have turned uncivil and impulsive. But thankfully, there are some who realize this and are quick to amend it in their own selves.

Loved this. Beautifully penned.

This is something I've thought about a lot in recent years.

There is no common ground to muddle.

Much of the blame lies with the Fox.

Ceers!

I like the line about muddying common ground.
