Little Hearts Of Stone

 Photo ~ Mama Zen

The desert is full
of little hearts
turned to stone.

They are
casualties
of fifty stars

that killed
compassion
with barbs
of red and blue.

Mama Zen over at Real Toads provided us with her beautiful iPhone photos of tiny fossils as inspiration for our poetry.

Wow! What an epic poem in so few words. My mind is filled with the magnitude of stars and space.

I just saw this come up on facebook Susie. I had to come here and tell you how powerful and touching it is. Absolutely spot on.

I like it Susie ~~ You've got me wondering about those "little hearts", are they of buffalo or Indians, or both, or even more?

Warning, my Muse got wimpy and balked at the fossils. I was glad M.Z. said we could do whatever. :)

I might have missed the reference in "fifty stars" and "barbs of red and blue". But nonetheless, I love the picture you paint with your succinct style. Beautifully penned. :)

… I understand the reference of 50 stars and you mention blue and red - you did a great job with so few words. I take exception to the implication as I don't agree exactly - BUT - I admire what you did here. Powerful and I suppose when one is on the receiving end of death and despair, it does not matter WHY anymore! So I do agree there.

Really amazing the impact this poem has with so few words! Wow.
