Drink up ladies
government’s
debating our health
and they don’t give
a damn about our voice.
A woman wanting
birth control is a whore
while a man wanting
an erection is a good old boy.
Drink up ladies
the right has taken
out a patent on morality
so they can sell it
back to churches.
Politicians are posing
for election pictures.
Grab a baby, a dog,
and an American flag.
Nothing spins better
than red, white
and blue apple pie.
Drink up ladies
we’re going
back to the future.
They’re refitting us
with aprons
and taking away choices.

sadly, so true...they tabled the invasive ultrasound procedure here in va until next year...what a snafu...our politicans really have lost touch with their people...and their lackeys, such as Rush, are detestable...
Powerful and well said!
This seems to happen every so many years~ The shift of turning the fragments of time upside!
It is awful, we have to keeping stepping backwards to go forward!
my friend just sent me this to sign:

coincidence
Your country is going backwards ...fast!
Instead of making yours equal rights for all they are not so slowly taking away many of the rights that took years for women to come by. At least here in Canada and much of Europe women are treated (now) as the equals they always were but were denied.
A strong write..I like the voice...I think we need to drink up and raise our fist ~
So much seems to heat up during election years! I am so glad Rush is losing many of his sponsors. May they continue to leave him by the score. Now if only his 'fans' would. Well stated poem, Susie!
Beautifully said. And so true!
seems like I remember reading this before....like in the 1950's...very timely piece for that era, Susie.
Seriously, what will be the next debate...slavery?...prohibition?...or women's right to vote?
great poem, I'll drink with you.
Thank you for this. I can't get the image of an aspirin between our legs for birth control as one Republican suggested! This poem would be good for submission here: http://poetry-24.blogspot.com/
Effective rant with a voice oozing irony. And great image.
Excellent little rant Suzie, perfect in light of recent media events. You've hit the nail on the head! Seems each election year the religious righteous come out of the closet, and 'men' once again debate whether to send us back to the dark ages of back-room abortions while calling anyone who has ever made a choice to use birth control a slut and a whore. Seems the name of the first woman, Eve, was the prefix for "evil" and men still seem to want to blame women for everything on the one hand, while reminding us that we owe our "lives" to them on the other. I hate politics, and pompous political asses, but loved your poem. I'll drink to that! :-)
What a sad state of affairs. I am old enough to recall back room abortions--how can we go back there--and how did we end up here?
we've come such a long way...no way to get back to where it started..or worse...thanks for raising your voice..think we need to fight for our rights..
Pow. This should be the song they play to Rush Limbaugh when they finally put him away for lying to the public. Rousing, cutting, razor sharp. Love these lines:

Take off your shoes and get yourself knocked up! It's barefoot and pregnant time!
I totally wish that I had written this.
the warmongers have partnered with the social religious extremists, and that's not good for anyone. well said. dark forces afoot everywhere these days. so good to hear this clear voice.
Susie - you have a great voice for this, and what a rallying cry! Thanks for this...
so true!
wonderful expression of our current environment, as they lose control of the "herd" they will swing into dramatic grasps of control and demeaning dominance, thanks to words and hearts such as yours we will prevail in our free. ~ Rose
I love the way you've expressed this. You've got a great voice.
REALLY excellent!
I gave you one of my weekly Goddess Awards for your sidebar if you're interested.
In joy,
Elise
WOW! This packs a whallop for sure..
I really like the repeated line about us drinking up. To numb us, perhaps?
